Tasting notes:
Classic opulent Californian Chardonnay from pioneers of the region. The nose is packed with fruit, creamy citrus and tropical notes. The palate is both lush and concentrated with great balance and rich nutty flavours. Textural silky and fresh acidity. This is a versatile and stylish white.
About the wine:
This wine comes from three growing regions within Santa Barbara County, each of which is influenced by unique soil types and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Santa Maria Valley is one of California’s coolest AVAs with well-drained soils and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. When picked at earlier stages of ripeness, Chardonnay from the Santa Maria Valley shows more citrus notes, and as the fruit ripens on the vine, it becomes increasingly tropical in expression. Slightly warmer in climate, the Los Alamos area has sandy loam soils. Just south of Santa Maria Valley and Los Alamos, the Sta. Rita Hills AVA is characterized by steep vineyard slopes, a distinct gravel minerality, and the signature Santa Barbara County ocean influence. 80% of this wine is fermented in stainless steel, 100% aged in French oak for nine months
About the producer:
In 1984 when Ken Brown founded Byron with the sole aim of producing the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County.
In 2003, Jonathan Nagy assumed winemaking duties. His small-lot, hands-on winemaking techniques have helped contribute to Byron’s success.
Intensive grape sorting, native yeast fermentations, and lot separation from harvest through winemaking with more than 170 separate batches of Pinot Noir alone – have helped create wines that combine the finesse of Burgundy and the power of California
