Tasting notes:

This rich, complex Chardonnay is surprisingly bright and elegant on the palate. Lush aromatics open effortlessly into flavours of ripened melon and apricot. A creamy texture mid-palate is nicely balanced with refreshing acidity and mineral notes that carry the wine to a long, lovely finish.

About the wine:

The Heitz Cellars Chardonnay undergoes a period of ageing in 100% French oak barrels.

About the producer:

Founded by pioneering Napa growers Joe and Alice Heitz in 1961, the estate is now run by daughter Kathleen Heitz-Myers and is in finer fettle than ever before. Joe and Alice helped Heitz grow into cult status and along the way championed the cause of Cabernet grown in the Napa valley.

Its flagship has always been the Martha's vineyard, the first vintage of which was 1966. They are truly the old world of the New World. As well as producing wine from this exemplary plot of vines Heitz also make the fine Bella Oaks and Trailside single vineyard cuvees in addition to a Cabernet blend from the Rutherford part of Napa, as well as some excellent Chardonnay and Zinfandel.

Top quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is used which is vinified in steel tanks, aged in large wood barrels for a year, followed by two and a half years in oak barriques. The wine is grown and made in the vineyard and whilst the family employ some of the most up to date technology there is, including satellite-based tracking of each individual vine, this only serves to enhance what nature gives them.

Far from being concocted "trophy" wines, these, above all, are designed to be highly drinkable and to give great pleasure. They are classic Napa Cabernets of great pedigree and sophistication.

Food match:

The Heitz Cellars Chardonnay is a lovely, slightly lighter style of Californian Chardonnay. I'd put it with roast meals, pork chicken or the like. It will also work very well with seafood, particularly a nice fat lobster. I'd also match it with some hard cheeses.
